At first, I despised this shoes, their soles were too big, and I just did not find them good looking. Why would a designer make shoes with chunky soles?, I would ask. Talk about the danger of a single story, I had read and heard too much negative views about them that I swore never to wear them. I recently saw someone in the streets of Nairobi in creepers, and they looked good, really stylish. To make it better, it was a young man!!.
So I did some research, and I was surprised. I just had to share. Worn during the World War II ,due to the climate and environment, by soldiers based in North Africa, creepers were originally introduced into the scene after the war by soldiers who continued wearing them to the night clubs, hence their alternative name, brothel creepers. They were later taken up by the Teddy Boys of the 1950′s who popularised them. In 1949, they were developed by George Cox who marketed them under the “Hamilton” name and later self made creepers were adopted by the Soviet subculture, Stilyagi who reffered to them as shoes on Semolina-meant thick crepe sole.
Creepers have found their way back into the fashion scene, after their revival in 1970′s by Malcolm Mclaren and his partner, Vivienne Westwood who sold it from their “Let it rock” shop which was rocker-oriented. Made of good texture especially suede and leather The grunge culture made creepers mainstream, with celebrities like Rihanna and Rita Ora rocking them as well as designers like Prada featuring them as part of their collection.
With all these research, I changed my mind. I am now a creeper, though I am yet to get one( they are hard to find here). I tried one before and they are really comfortable. They are a chunky style statement and I find them really stylish. I plan to wear them with a khaki, chino denim or leather pants and a printed shirt/ t shirt, hoping I get one. It depends on what shall be in my wardrobe at that time. I’ll go bold and wear a short too! and when I am feeling bored, I will pair them with a suit.
I can’t wait to get creepers, even 1 pair!!. I’ll definitely post when I get one. What do you think of creepers with a suit? and I wonder if I’ll get bored with them fast? did you?.
